Description: HSS features high fracture and fatigue strength as well as high yield limit. They are ideal when adhesive/abrasive wear toughness is needed. Owing to these features, HSS is extensively used in a wide range of cutting tools such as drill bits, taps, reamers, saw blades, milling cutters, gear cutters and tool bits. High-Speed Steels (HSS) are the cutting tool materials used for machining of materials. The HSS will be used for machining of materials. ... 18% of Tungsten or Molybdenum, used for increasing hot hardness temperature of tool material. It is often used in power-saw blades and drill bits. It is superior to the older high-carbon steel tools used extensively through the 1940s in that it can withstand higher temperatures without losing its temper (hardness). This property allows HSS to cut faster than high carbon steel, hence the name high-speed steel. High Speed Steel is a high carbon tool steel, containing a large dose of tungsten. A typical HSS composition is: 18% tungsten, 4% Chromium, 1% Vanadium, 0.7% carbon and the rest, Iron. HSS tools have a harness of 62-64 Rc. The addition of 5 to 8% cobalt to HSS imparts higher strength and wear resistance.
